CONTROL OF SCHOOLS

EDUCATION BOARD. STAFFING CHANGES. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held in Wanganui yesterday, those present being tilr E. F. ileinuigway (chairman), Loionel J. H. W hyte, Messrs \\. it. Brown, A. 8. Coleman, i. W. Mudlord, J. W. Batcholar, P. Munro, L. A. Bailey and i\. Annahell. An apology lor absence was received irom rur \V. T. Benefield. Mr B. N. T. Blake, recently appointed chief inspector to the hoard, was welcomed by the chairman. Mr Hemingway mentioned that predecessors or Mr Blake had reached high positions in educational service. In reply, Mr Blake said that what ho had seen in his short association with the schools under the jurisdiction of the board was something of which this and previous boards could he proud. A tender was accepted for the purchase and removal of a residence on newly acquired land for the Foxton District High School. The Education Department advised that a grant would be made to enable improvements to bo made to the Taonui School building. The Clydesdale School Committee having sought a grant for laying down a basketball and drill area, the architect (Mr E. K. Hodge) recommended that one-third of the cost he met hv a grant (amounting to £4O 6s Sd). The number of children at the school (27) did not; warrant a larger grant. The recommendation was adopted on the motion of Mr Muilford, seconded Ivy Mr Batchelar. The meeting endorsed the action of the chairman (on the recommendation of the senior inspector) in instructing the headmaster of the College Street School to restrict the numbers of entrants this year in order to obviate accommodation difficulties.

The Education Department wrote asking the board to notify school committees amd teachers that special apparatus could not lie replaced in event of fire, and was not insured.— The secretary (Mr G. N. Boulton) said that tiiis applied to radio sets, gramophones. etc., as only the school buildings and furniture were insured. Application was made by the teacher at the Poliangina School to house the local library in the school. —Granted. .Reference was made by Mr' Almilord to the proposed acquisition of land for a new school at Raugiotu. It was reported that negotiations for the acquisition of this land had been proceeding for two years. Colonel W byte was deputed to further these negotiations, and it was decided, on Mr Batchelar’s motion, that if these cannot be curried forward steps be taken to acquire the land under the 1 üblic Works Act. The board decided to congratulate Dr. C. E. C. Bee by on his appointmeiit to the position of Director oi Education and to assure him ol the board's heartiest co-operation. It was reported that the following teachers were leaving or had left the board's service: Mr T. Kane, headmaster Foxton D.H.5..; Miss E. r. K razor infant mistress. Ala.nclieutei Street;’ Mrs R. M. Sand brook, assistant mistress, Manchester Street; Miss J. M.
