Big R.A.F.Raid
BOMBING GREATEST OF WAR (From Daventry.) Within a few hours of Mr Chamberlain making a statement in the House of Commons regarding the German air raid on Scapa Flow on Saturday, a big raid by Royal Air Force bombing ’planes too* place' last evening at 8 o’clock on the German air base on the island of Sylt and was still continuing four hours later. An Air Ministry announcement states that an important German air base had been attacked and repeatedly bombed. The statement was repeated by Mr Chamberlain in the House of Commons, when he said the raid was made in retaliation for that on Scapa Flow by the Nazis on Saturday. The base is that from which German ’planes operate against merchant shipping. , Reports from Copenhagen state that the raid was on a big scale. Watchers on a Danish island saw one 'plane drop eight bombs on the base and other machines repeatedly appeared, also dropping bombs at various points. Gunfire was then heard and searchlights came into play. Another Danish report says nothing like the raid has been seen before. Many reports of firing could be heard on the Danish coast. Further bombs were dropped on the Hindenburg dam, connecting the Island of Sylt with the mainland. Bcmbs were also dropped on the extreme south of the Island of Sylt. The detonation of the bombs was so severe that windows were broken over a wide area, including the Danish coast.
