NEW ZEALAND PENSIONS.
REFERENCE IN COAIMONS. LONDON, Fob. 20. > Opposition cries of “New Zealand” greeted Air AY. W. Wakefield's question in the House of Commons during the pensions debate, “What other country is doing so much for aged persons in this period of grim struggle?” Sir D. B. Somervell (Con.) agreed that New Zealand was able to provide, for aged persons, despite her present difficulties, “but she is able because she makes profits from trading with Britain. This old capitalist country is almost her sole market. “I am delighted Now Zealand is able to make such provision. What she did in the last war was magnificent, and what she is doing now is magnificent, but if members of the Opposition reproach us because New Zealand is doing more about pensions and social services, it should he rememberedthat New Zealand’s ability in this direction depends on profits from Britain.”
