DEFENCE CONTRACTS.
HUGE SUM FOR U.S. M ARITIMe”IN CREASES. WASHINGTON, Sept. 22. Defence contracts have been placed totalling 64.000,000 dollars, of which 58,585,000 dollars are allocated for bombers, observation, pursuit and training ’planes. The Maritime Commission has placed contracts for 11 ships, making the yearly total 73. At present there are *I4OO American merchant ships, 300 of which are trans-oceanie. The Commission is considering reconditioning the former German liners taken over in 1917 and renamed Mount Vernon, Monticello, America, and George Washington.
