BEBBINGTON SHIELD.

OROUA BEATEN. DANNEVIRKE, July 29. In adverse conditions the Danncvirke Rugbv Sub-union representatives beat the challenging Oroua Sub-union representatives in a Bebbington Shield match to-dav by V2 points to three. The first spell was not productive ol exciting plav, for the most part being confined to the forwards. Oroua had a nigged, bustling pack, each man prepared to push in the tight and, with their backs standing close up on the Dannevirke backs and defending well, they spoiled effectively. Dannevirke, however, won the majority of set scrums, but in the first spell the backs were unable to penetrate. Penalties to both sides were frequent, and bad Dannevirke's kickers been anywhere near form some of the many attempts would have gone over. .After a scoreless first hall. JJanncvirke forwards played more of the game expected of them and gained superiority in the loose, with Hunt, Butler Hansen and Peters prominent. In spite of heavy intermittent hail, play brightened and. following a devastating forward rush, Hansen whipped the ball awav for Edwards to score. Harris missed an easy kick. Shortly afterward Corbishley put in a good run to score ,noar the'corner. The best try of the day came I nun a scrum when Harris sent the ball to HerlKjrt who drew the opposition to give Butler a good try. A similar move Involving Harris. Edwards and Peiio resulted in Herbert beating the lullback to score. Oroua's points came from a penalty bv Amadio, whose play at full-back' was most impressive. On the few occasions when the Oroua backs did function, they gave the impression that, with better service from the forwards, they would haye been a danfcroiw attacking unit. J hey ran strongly, McKenzie being conspicuous in several good bursts through the defence Had thev secured the ball more in the earlv part of the game they would certainly have been dangerous with the uncertain defence, of the Dannevirko side. During the game, Gollan and Sewcll were replaced _ by Xnpier and Gushing on the Dannevirke 'side and Bielski and Thompson by Oib> and Lawrence in the Oroua team. The teams were: Dannevirke.—L. Hansen Jhller, forbishlev. Herbert. Edwards, Vcne. Karris Sewcll. Cameron, L'eters, Hunt. Butler, Gollan, W. Hansen. Franklin. T Oroua.—Amadio. L. Thompson . . McKenzie, «. Thomnson 1 oHard. Shannon. Coley. C. Elliott Mead..,. Bielski. Glassford, Sowerby, fcpillman, Rcvell," Elliott.
