Wind tunnel tests may result in R.A.F. fighters ■ attaining a speed ct 700 miles an hour. , „ . , An official of the National Physical Laboratory said: “Engine improvements huvc made possible a speed of GOO miles an hour, if we can reduce the air drag. We are unable, to disclose the secret of the iastest R.A.F. aeroplane, but it far exceeds the published figure of 400 miles an hour. “Aeroplanes of the future will be of metal, specially treated to prevent skin friction, which we hope to reduce by GO to 70 per cent, in air tunnel tests, after which speeds approaching 700 miles an hour will bo within practical reach.”-
