CYCLING

AMATEUR EVENT. On Saturday the Palmerston North amateur cyclists held the eleventh road race of tho season,- the couise being from Palmerston Nortn to Sanson and back through Rongotea, a distance or 36 miles. Considering the day a hug field started, the first away being aBl At e tho top of Mt, Stewart Bridle was in the lead, followed by W a ike r and Sheridan, who had caught Lade. Next came Rogers, followed by Campbell, Hazelwood, and Hall, then Johnson and Essex, closely followed >. McNab and Loader. Donovan broke his chain as the race was starting and had to retire. McNab sustained a puncture, also retiring. 1 assmg through Sanson Bridle was still leading from Eade, Walker and Sheridan, followed by Rogers, close behind Hazelwood, Hall and Campbell. Then came tho back-markers Loader, Johnson and Essex. On the run to Rongotea Bridle was caught by Sheridan. Eade and Walker. Then came Hall, Rogers, and Hazelwood, closely followed by Campbell, who in turn was followed by Loader, Essex, and Johnson. Coming „p the Kairanga-Bunny thorpe Road the leaders were caught by Hall and Rogers, and in a fast finish Hall was first over the line. The- following arc the placings: BHall (smin), 1; W. Sheridan (10mm), 2- R. Walker (lOmin.), 3; H. Rogers (Simin), 4. Fastest times: lL Loader lhr. 39min. 10 l-ssec, 1; B. Hall, lhr41min., 2; H. Essex, lhr. 42m. 10sec., 3 Next week there will be no club race as all the riders have entered tor the Woodviilc 50-mile event ■
