HARRIER EVENT

WEST COAST TITLE. DEFEAT OF C. AY ELLER. Fourteen members of the Y.M.C’.A. Harrier Club participated in the West; Coast cross-country championship at Wanganui, on Saturday. The surprise of the day was the defeat of C. Weller j (Palmerston North), six times West I Coast champion. JI. J. Brown (New ! Plymouth) ran excellently to capture his second West Coast; title, and F. ( Hill (Marlon), runner-up on the last ; four occasions, again filled second place. Fifty-three runners, representing the i Wanganui, New Plymouth, Merton, j Palmerston North and Eeilding Clubs, ! faced the starter (Mr G. Benson), j The race was run over a one-lap I course of 61 miles. The paddocks were very slippery after the heavy rain, and a strong head wind for most of the journey made the limes slow. The runners went away to a last start and on reaching the hill after lij miles the field was well strung, with Brown, Mill, Cox, Wclier, Bromley. Hunt and Hearsay in front, 'fhe order was much the same throughout the race and some close finishes were witnessed for some of the minor plneings. Ho lias not had the opportunity to train extensively this season, but will undoubtedly perform much better at the New Zealand championships. N. Hearsay, D. McCardle and L. Hawthorne ran very veil. Hearsay has been running consistently lor lour seasons and his inclusion in the AA est Coast team as an individual was fully merited. Hawthorne did surprisingly well to finish tenth in a course that does not usually suit him, and D. AleCart He again achieved the distinction of being the first junior to fini-.il. The other A men, •). .Scott- and C. AfcYicar, did not perform up to expectations, the former losing 27 placings on his seventh place at the AA cst Coast championships last year. Of the B foam J. AA oodd ran easily bis best this season. He ran well over the hills and gained much ground on the fences. J. Spall, 11. McDonald and S. McVicar ran to their usual form, hut 1.
