MOMENTOUS HARVEST.

REAPING IN EUROPE. LONDON, July 1. Awaited with misgivings instead of joy, Europe’s momentous harvest is now being reaped. The German harvesting began officially last Saturday, accompanied by excitement not previously known during the Nazis’ regime. It, will probably take a month to bring in. its completion concluding with the Nuremberg rally. The Berlin correspondent of the Observer says harvest is now a concrete time-post for expert eyes anxiously scanning the mutations of German foreign policy. Universities and colleges arc closed a fortnight early to enable the mobilisation of student labourers, 30.000 of whom are transported to East Prussia, Silesia and Pomerania. It is semi-officially estimated that the harvest will be of a good average quality, but extreme variations in the weather have had their effect and there is unlikiy to be repetition of last year’s record grain crop. The Prague correspondent of the British United Press reports that the Nazis are blowing up sections of the former Czechoslovakian third defence line because it is said to hinder the harvesting. The English harvest is reported to be nearer normal than exceptional. Wheat, barley and oats erops are fairly satisfactory, lint fruit and vegetablesj are extremely good and are expected to yield 20 to 30 per cent, better than last year.
