MINISTER EXONERATED.
SYDNEY POST OFFICE TENDERS. Received Julv 29, 11.5 a.m. SYDNEY, July 28. The Royal Commission which inquired into the rival tenders for remodelling the Sydney General Post Office, concerning which there was much controversy some weeks ago, has found that the former Minister of Defence (Mill. Y. C. Tliorby) had acted precipitately, but otherwise there was no departmental impropriety and no sugguestion of dishonesty or corruption. The Prime Minister (Mr R. G. Alcnzies), expressing his gratification with the findings, said he saw no reason why the successful tenderer should not proceed with the work. Among the findings of the Royal Commission was that the instructions that the contract was not to be signed, which were issued bv Cabinet, did not reach the works director in Sydney (Mr Orwin) until after lie signed the contract. The Commonwealth Birec-tor-General of Works (Mr Mchaffey) failed in his duty in not giving proper instructions that the contract was not to be signed, but there was no suspicion of bribery or dishonesty of any so’-t among the Commonwealth Ministers or departmental officers in their acceptance of the tender.
