FORESTERS’ LODGE. An invitation to be represented at the silver jubilee celebration oi the local Hibernian Lodge was accepted by Court AA’oodvillc, A.0.E., on Thursday evening, the secretary (l .C.R. Bro. E. 11. Giles) and another being appointed. The C.R. (Bro. J). Harris) reported that Bros. 1). A ogt, Nilsson, and himself had attended a function held by the Friendly Societies’ Council at Palmerston North. The secretary stated that Bros. O. IT. Hares, R. Bly, C. AY. Squires and himself were present at a presentation ceremony held by Court Pohangina at Ashhurst. A letter was read from tile secretary of Court Kopuarangi, Alauriccvillo, intimating that an endeavour was being made for the AYellington district executive to meet members of North AA airarapa courts at Rahiatua, on a date to be arranged. The lodge expressed its support of the proposal. Eight members wore reported on the sick fund. Jhe Manawatu Friendly Societies’ Hospital Association forwarded a balance-sheet for the year ended December 31, 1938. During this period a sum ot £IOOS 19s Gd hail been paid to hospital hoards for the treatment of lodge patients. The district secretary advised that, so far as-was known, there was no means test for hospital benefits under the Social Security Act. Copies were distributed of the report of the annual meeting of the Dominion Council oi Friendly Societies.
PAPATAWA INSTITUTE.
The golden thread tall? at the last meeting of the Papatawa AA omen’s Institute comprised a very interesting narrative by Airs A. E. Dinkins of her recent travels in Now South AVales, where she spent a holiday of two months. The president (Airs L. E. Gleadow), in thanking Mrs Diekms for her address, expressed the pleasure of members that Mrs Dickins s trip had been so enjoyable. Mrs Gleadow also welcomed several visitors. An instructive smocking demonstration was given by Airs J. Singers, of Ngawapurua. The monthly competition, consisting of a three-cornered scarf in two-ply wool, was won hv Airs Sandbrook (seniors) and Aliss Gilbert (juniors). The hostesses were Mrs 1. Hutchinson and Airs Ray Morgan.
BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was hold at noon yesterday lor the purpose of making and levying ordinary and special rates for the ensuing year from April 1, in accordance with the provisions of the Rating Act. The formal motion was proposed hv the Alayor, seconded by Cr. Galbraith, and carried. A special order was also passed, on the motion of the Alayor and Cr. Sullivan, confirming the sale of certain land belonging to the lwrough to Airs E. Morgan. The gasworks manager (Air H. Pettersen) reported that urgent repairs wore required to two of the retorts. He was authorised to have the repairs effected immediately. A complaint was made of stock again trespassing on Fountains Square. Tt was decided that action be taken against the owner. Svmpathv was expressed with the tow'll clerk'(Mr _D. Keay) in his illness, and it was decided to write him accordingly.
PAHIATUA
The deaih occurred at Invercargill recently of Rev. J. Chalmers Mill, who was for several years pastor of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, i’ahiatua. An old identity. Airs ('. Holland, passed away recently at the ago of 80 years. Her husband predeceased her some years ago. The family resided for many years at Coonoor. At the age of 83 years, the death has occurred at Tirauinca. Bond, of Mr R. If. Fogdcn, father of Aliss Fogden, of l’aliiatua. .
Mr J. McTavieh, of l’ahiatua, who for many years resided at “Oele, ’ Kohiimi. celebrated his 82nd birthday during the week.
