UPPER HOUSE APPOINTMENTS
In the House of Representatives, yesterday, u break was made in the debate on the Address-in-lleply, when flic Government secured urgency for the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Hill— a drastic measure containing authority for the deregistration 0 f unions, whether of workers or of employers, which cause stoppages of work in contravention of the law.
The Bill, which received the general support of the Opposition, passed all stages and \v as eventually passed by the Upper House. lion. P. C. We],!, (Minister of Labour) stated that immediately it became law ac (j ou would be taken to deal with the Auckland dispute. The Address-in-lteplv debate was resumed at night, when Mr "W. J. Poison asserted that the promises made to the dairy farmers under the guaranteed price scheme had been abandoned.
In his maiden speech, Mr E. ]}. Gordon (llaiigitikei) sought clarification of the Government’s land policy. Two new appointments Were made in the Legislative Council. The Speakership wa s filled by the election of Hon. M. Pagan, and his place as Le n( ler of the Council was taken by the appointment of Hon. j), Wilson, a member of the Council.
