COUNTY DONATIONS

WHERE PRACTICE SHOULD END. ILOROWHKXUA DISCUSUSION. A discussion took place at the monthly meeting of the Horowlieiuta County Council, on Friday, tut the making of donations by local bodies to different organisations when applications were made. The question arose when the Plunket Society, Levin branch, wrote stating that the society had decided that the memorial for its founder, the late Sir Truhy King, would cost ioOOO, and an appeal was made for a contribution. “The I’lunlvCfc movement has been loyally supported by this body, and with this attitude I entirely agree,” said the chairman (Or. G. A. Monk). “We agree with the very great work which was carried out by the late Sir Truby King.” lie contended, however, that a memorial was not a real memorial unless it was contributed to by the individual. He would be happy to contribute himself, but he had no recommendation to make as far as the council was concerned.

Cr. A. J. Gimblett: I agree that the late Sir Truby King did a wonderful work. If you are to ask the public to contribute, it will mean one more ol these ever-lasting subscription lists. II you can get willing workers to take these lists round, then I agree with the idea of individual contribution, but 1 do not think that they will get to more than bO per cent, of ihe people. As recognition of Sir Truby King’s work, 1 would like to sec the council make a donation, however small. Cr. C. P. Jensen said it was quite a filling thing that the memorial should come, not through the local bodies, but through the public. ‘‘ If veil recognising the wonderful work of .Sir Truby King as I do, I think that the time has come .to call a halt to the making of donations to organisations throughout the length and bread til of the Dominion,” said Cr. L. 11. Best.

Cr. A. 31. Colqulioun : I agree with ihe chairman that it should be an individual contribution. Cr. Gimblett -paid that in view of the chairman’s explanation that the request had come only from the l.evin branch, lie entirely agreed with the chairman’s attitude. In answer to Cr. J. ]). Aitehison, the chairman sflid the council contributed nearly .€lO a year "to the organisation. He hoped to see the donation continued. He felt: that the method of the present appeal was wrong, and it was not a. matter for local bodies.

There being no further discussion the letter was received.
