CROSSING LAWS
DUTY OF MOTORISTS. CARE OE REDESTIANS. ENFORCING REGULATION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, J uly. 17. Tire importance of enforcing 1 tire regulation which requires motorists to give way to pedestrians on the marked crossing was stressed by Mr Justice Reed in his charge to the Grand Jury at the opening of the criminal session of the Supreme Court in Wellington to-day. “Whether there are difficulties in the way of enforcing it 1 do not know, but personal observation, and others must have noticed it shows that the regulation is honoured more in the breach than in the observance,” said H.is Honour. There was a large proportion of decent motorists who would slow down when they saw a pedestrian on a .crossing, hut a large number of others seemed to have no regard J'or the rights of pedestrians and dashed past them on crossings. He did not know whether there were any difficulties i'll prosecuting persons for doing that, hut something -mould be done to stop it particularly as the Exhibition was coming on in Wellington and there would he a large number of strangers coming to the city from places where the regulation was enforced,, “otherwise we will have people killed or injured during the time that there are •■1 rangers in Wellington,” lie said. •‘People living in Wellington know they can't always rely on vehicles “lopping when they are on crossings, but strangers who don't know that may suffer,” His Honour concluded.
