CHESS.

At tlie weekly meeting of the Palmerston North Chess Club it was seen that the new method adopted this season of handicapping players in different classes and allowing the weaker players an opportunity not only of improving their chess by receiving play from stronger fellow members, but also of reaching a respectable score at the end of the season. Following are games played in the handicap section: —Dr. Heifer defeated R. Yorke ; L. Christensen defeated B. Clyne : A’orke defeated IT. Clyne; Rowlands defeated Burton; R. Christensen defeated A'orke. Keen interest is also being taken in tournament play, the evening’s games resulting as follow: —J. Griggs defeated Burton; Reifer defeated Brill; H. Christensen defeated Perkins; AVilliams defeated Griggs; R. Christensen defeated A’orke. Mr H. Clyne was welcomed as a member and Air G. AlcLachlan as a visitor.
