OBITUARY.

MR D. H. ROBERTS. The death, which occurred at Greymouth last week, of All* D. H. Roberts, a well-known sportsman, recalls his early associations with the Manawatu district, where, the other members of the family still reside. His mother arrived in New Zealand on July 7, 1839, in the vessel Martha Edgwny, with one of the first bands of colonists to reach Wellington. His parents first settled at Sandon ’ and later in the Pohangina Valley, blithe entered into business, finally going south. , Brothers of the late Mr D. H. Roberts are Messrs F. Roberts (Pohangina), J. J. Roberts (Rnumai), W. E. Roberts and R. S. Roberts (Utuwni) ; sisters being Airs T. Searle (Palmerston North), Mrs C. Searle (Ut-uwai) and Ali.ss M. Roberts (Pohangina). The funeral took place yesterday at the Ashhurst cemetery. The racing colours of the late Air Roberts were well known throughout New Zealand. One of the first horses raced in his name was The Cornet, who won the Dunedin Birthday Handicap in 1911- Air Roberts won tho James Hazlett Gold Cup with Fiery Cross in 1918 and the Auckland Cup with the same horse in 1917. He won the Great Autumn Handicap with Glendowfcr in 1918, the Grand National Hurdles with Jolly Beggar in 1935 and 1936, and the Greymouth Cup of 193 G with the same horse. Air Roberts also owned tho imported stallion Sarto after the break-up of the Warrington Stud.
