PERSONAL.
A vote of sympathy with Rotarian E. J. Hickin, whose mother died ercently in England, was passed yesterday at the weekly luncheon of tbe Palmerston North Rotary Club.
Mr J. Hodgens. M.P., returned home last evening from a two months’ visit to Australia, He was engaged primarily during bis visit in tbe selection of building artisans for employment in New Zealand. Mr P. W. Jackson, who for the past four years and a-lialf, lias been accountant of the Wellington branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia', Ltd., left to-day to take up tbe position of assistant-manager in tbe bank’s bead office, in London.
Major R. D. Hardie, D. 5.0., brother of Mr J. R. Hardie, town clerk, and a former resident of Palmerston North, left yesterday for a six months’ tour overseas, during which he will visit England and Scotland. Major Hardie was farewelled at the station by a number of friends.
A unique family association with ships and the sea lias been broken by the death in London on Saturday of Captain Charles Malcolm Renaut, formerly of Christchurch, aged 69, says a Press Association telegram from Christchurch. Captain Renaut’s grandfather, Captain "William Renaut, brought to Otago in 1848 the Blundell, the third immigrant ship to arrive there and first to be entered in tbe Customs records in Port Chalmers. His father, Captain C. H. Renaut, was famous .as captain of the clipper ship Crusader, which made record passages from New Zealand to England, and also of the Pleione. Captain C. M. Renaut first served with bis father in sailing ships, later transferred to steam, and for many years commanded Union Company vessels. He retired in 1935.
