LAWN TENNIS NOTES

Members of the Palmerston North Club again had plenty to interest them on Saturday and “during the weekend.”

On Saturday, the club’s A team, winners of the northern section of the interclub competition, met the Levin Club, winners of the southern section, for the championship of all clubs in the Manawatu L.T.A., at the Linton Street courts. -

The result was an overwhelming defeat of the invaders, who however have lost their three leading ladies of the last few years, while Palmerston North has only lost Mrs J. H. McDonald, last year’s Manawatu a.nd Palmerston North champion. Of those playing for Levin, only Dr. Thompson and Miss Nicholson were included in this year’s team The result. 16 rubbers to none, has been exceeded on the Linton Street courts on more than one occasion, notably when Manawatu beat Wairarapa by 24 rubbers to none a few years ago. “During the week-end” two important matches in the P.N.L.T C. championships were played, Airs Hobin putting up the record of haying won the club championship five times bv beating Mrs Lennon 6-—3, 6—l. They had previously met this season when Mrs Lennon won 6 —4. (3—2.

The match between Hobin and O’Brien was generally looked upon as a good thing for the former, who has had a long series of successes this season. He started well by winning the first four games, but O’Brien, who is generally a slow beginner, took the next three games and drew level at five-all, eventually winning the set at 7 —5. Jn the second set Hobin again started well, winning the first three games, but O’Brien drew level at three all. The scores were equal at five-all. and Hobin led 6—5, but O’Brien again finishing strongly, won at B—6.8 —6. As all the competitors start with two lives and Hobin had not previously lost a life, but when they met previously had beaten O’Brien 6—2. 6 —4, they nre now left with one life each, and the championship will l>o finally decided next Saturday, weather permitting. In an Association trial McMurrav and Christie had as usual a very level match, Christie winning 4—6, 7 —5, 10—8.
