D.H. SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The District High School Committee met last night, there being present Messrs R.' It. Johnston (chairman), A. Al. Pickering (secretary), L. J. Whittington, T. Smith, H. J. Ale-Peak, R. Peebles, E. J. Harding, L. Williams, and Rev. P. B. Williams. The headmaster (Air J. S. Mcßean) also attended.
A motion of condolence was passed to Air A. Harris and family in their recent bereavement, the chairman stating that the late Mrs Harris, to whose memory lie paid a tribute, had been a valuable helper at many school functions.
The headmaster’s report stated that the roll number was 267. Tile attendance had been fairly good. Several pupils had been successful at a schools’ sports gathering at Dannevirke, particulars of which have already appeared in the “Standard.” Reference was made to the recent street stall, mention being made of the help of Air S. Turnbull, Mesdames Johnston, E. J. Harding, H J. Mcl’eak, T. Smith, R. Hurdle, and Ale-Bean, Aliss Wliitta, and Mr A. A. Walker. The chairman stated that the net result of the street stall had been £2O. On his motion, a vote oi thanks was passed to the headmaster and staff, also to Mrs Mcßean. The chairman also reported that the headmaster and himself had recently visited Palmerston North, where they had obtained some useful information regarding a cinema for the school. An interview with Art E. Bary (Central School) had been beneficial. A discussion ensued regarding the proposed projector, and the discussion was deferred till the next meeting, further details to be obtained in the meantime. The Hawke’s Bay Education Board advised that Aliss M. B. Weblev ba‘l been appointed a relieving teacher. Air R. D. L. Irwin, of I/evin, who had been appointed secondary assistant, would take up his duties shortly. Miss J. AL Watson had been appointed an additional assistant.
In regard to a complaint which had been made by the committee regarding the condition in which the classrooms had been left after the electrical installation. the board, which had been in communication with the Dannevirke Power Board, forwarded the sum. of 15s for the cleaning of the classrooms. The Power Board had not recognised liability, and had staled that if it had been notified in the first instance it would have insisted upon the contractors returning and putting the rooms in order. Referring to the success of the school at the Dannevirke sports, the chairman said that this was, no doubt-, largely due to the fostering of sport by the Athletic Club, which had held various evening meetings. The scholars were complimented upon their success.
It was decided to n.sk the Education Board if it would be prepared to pay a subsidy on an estimated expenditure of £3O on the library. The chairman reported that the credit balance at the end of the financial year would be £33, explaining; that, due to various causes, the amount was less than for the corresponding period of last year. It was resolved to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr H. M. Lyons, who had been acting as relieving teacher, Air Harding mentioning the interest he had. manifested in athletics.
