ATHLETIC CONTESTS

MISS NORMAN OUTSTANDING. EVENTS AT AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 25. Tiie Britisii Empire champion woman atniete, Miss Lleeima rxorman, showed, her superiority over the Dominion's finest women performers by decisively winning tne iUO yards, the 22u yards and tne broad jump ehainpionsfiips at the first national junior and women’s title meeting held at Carlaw Park in brilliant weather today.

Miss Norman began by beating her old rival Miss Doreen Lumicy, of Auckland, by two yards 111 Liie filial of tho IUO yards championship. Great interest centred 111 tins contest, which was eagerly awaited by a crowd o! GUUU spectators. Beginning brilliantly, the Australian girl had tne contest 111 hand at the hallway mark, and she went on to win by a clear margin. Her brilliance was again shown in the 220 yards and uroad jump championships, both ot which she won with ease.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Miss Norman and her chaperone, Mrs J. F. Magee, were iarwelled on behalf of New Zealand athletes by Mr H. Ij. Towers, president of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Centre. Miss Norman was presented with an inscribed gold l iki, while Mrs Magee was the recipient of a greenstone tiki. Many brilliant performances were witnessed by a large crowd, the tournament being a pronounced success and its continuation in future years being assured.

The meeting was attended in the morning by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E Parry) and Mrs Parry, who were welcomed by Mr Towers.

Mr Parry congratulated the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on its initiative in beginning junior and women’s championshps, and especially paid a tribute to the Auckland Centre, which has worked for tho championships for several years. He said the young women of to-day realised that for them a physically fit body was just as important as for their brothers.

The Towers Shield for the province gaining most points was won by Auckland with 28 points, Canterbury and Otago being equal, second, with 21. Results :
