SUBMISSION’S HIGH CLASS

Submission, a full sister io Honour, Courtcruft uiui Episode (who is tlio dam of Entail, winner of the Tomato to Handicap) showed that stie is a filly of great chess by the manner in which she won the Manawalu Sires’ I’roduce Stakes ■ from end to end on the concluding day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting, on Saturday, lb was the Eimorid filly's second win at the mooting, and her success completed a treble for her AVanganui owner (Air G. AC Currie) and trainer (\V. Ravner). Starting in l>oth her races from a position near the outside of the field. Submission was skilfully handled by fho Awapuni rider, AV. .Tonkins, and was in front of her field all the way each day. She won the Stakes in exceedingly fast time and appears to have a very bright future.

The failure of either of the Eeau Pe/e colts Beau A'itc and Beaulivre to take the major honours came as a complete surprise. Duran, who was preferred to Beau A’itc in the belling, also disappointed badly. Race Call, who is in great form at present, likewise scored a double at the meeting when the first- day's open sprint winner won the Longburn Tlandicap in course record time, exactly a second faster than that made by Submission over the, same distance in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. It was a great effort on the part of the winner, who likes the Awapuni track, and finished very strongly on the outside to win by a length. Entail, staldemate of Submission, brought off a big surprise when he won ilie Tamatete Handicap with a

great run up the outside after the issue appeared to be settled. It- was the Posterity gelding's first win since the New Zealand St. J.cger Stakes in ItfiG. and lie paid nearly a score. Recently he ran third in the Earle Stakes at AVanganui and fourth in the Autumn Handicap at Trcntham. The time was -f-osec faster than that of Beaupartir in the Awapuni Gold Cup.

Sudan, who might have won on the first day but for having to he checked temporarily in the straight and brought round on the outside, scored an overdue success when she won the North island Hack Plate, but she was very lucky to get the decision by a head over Red AA’itch, who had been very consistent until she failed at Trentham. Bed AA’itch. who came up with a late run on the outside, appeared to have the race won a few yards from the post. ANOTHER SAL ART FILLY. Pearl of Asia, the sister to Tout Lc AJonde and icing, showed what a smart filly she is hy annexing the Stonyhurst Juvenile Handicap. She was a good thing beaten on the first day, when she finished second alter twice being chopped back in attempting to get through. Pearl of Asia is going on to Auckland to fulfil her engagement in the Champagne Stakes at Easter, and Peerless will accompany her to the northern fixture. Hanover, who has a good record in jumping events this season, and has improved a great deal of recent months, won the Jxairanga Hurdles, and looks likely to be a good proposition tliis winter. However, Sunec, the first day winner, would have repeated his success if lie had not nearly fallen at the second to bust fence.

Ecstatic had an easy win in the Lockwood Handicap.

Trebor, who was a warm favourite when lie failed the first day, ran Ills last race in hack company when he won the Adderstono Handicap. Subsequently an inquiry was held into liis reversal of form, but the explanation of his trainer wa-s accepted as being satisfactory.

The course was in -perfect order, with the going firm and fairly fast. There was a large attendance of the public. The totalisator handled £30,035 for the day, compared with £28.367 for the second day of the autumn meeting last year, an increase of £1668. The turnover for the meeting was £52,979 10s, compared with £48,846 10s last year, an increase of £4133 for the meeting. Descriptions of events additional to those which appeared in the first edition of the “Standard” on Saturday are: ECSTATIC’S NARROW WIN. Ecstatic, who was a pronounced favourite, in the Lockwood Handicap, just got home by a head from Red Cat, who had been in the money in her race on the first day. The winner was rather leniently treated in the handicap and was always going well. Red Cat, Deficit, Ecstatic and Blonde Princess were the first to show up, Blonde Princess taking charge at | the half-mile to lead into the straight from Red Cat, Deficit, Ecstatic and Copy Cat. The first pair drew out in the run home to fight out the issue. Aurora’s Star, who was eighth entering the straight, came with a strong run at the finish to be two lengths away third. Copy Cat was fourth, followed by 'Deficit, and Blonde Princess, both of whom disappointed. Next came Dorak, and Floral Rohe. Filletto. who had made a forward move at the half-mile, went hack again and finished last. ENTAIL’S BIG SURPRISE. Entail, who was neglected by ihe betting public, brought off a big surprise in the Tamatcte Handicap to I>ay a substantial double-figure dividend when ho got up to beat the favourite Peerless by a neck alter a great run on the outside in the straight. Entail and Submission, both from W. Ravner’s stable at Wanganui, had so far paid the biggest prices at the meeting. Entail had lately been showing promise of 1 coming right after a long absence from tlie winning list. ’lhe race was run. in fast time, 4-sseo better than for the Awapuni Gold Cup yesterday. Galteemore, a first-dav winner, again attempted to win all the way. being followed throughout the journey immediately bv Gay Son. Peerless and Amigo. Peerless was the first to challenge in the run up the straight, both she and Gay Son catching Galteemore at the distance. Entail was seventh entering the straight, then ap|>eared on tho scene with a great run up the outside to snatch the verdict hv a neck Gav Son was only n. head away third followed by Galteemore, Amigo. Rustem. Hunting Cat, Seigmund and Cheval de Volee. who was never going kindly, the top-weight having been run off his legs hv tho fast pace set. This was Entail’s first win since his success in the New Zealand St. Txtger in 1936. AVON ALL ’THE WAY. Submission confirmed the good impression she created on the first day and her fast pace by again scoring, when she won tho Manawatu Sires'

jProduce Stakes in time only l-osoe I slower than the record (1.2 G) ostahlishjed hv High Comedy in 1920. Submission won all the way, although she was not favoured in her harrier position. Following u[>on Kntail’s success this gave the owner and stable their third success at the meeting. Submission paid another price just short of double figures. Jioau Y'ite. the favourite, was leading his rival Boaulivro on equal terms, but these two good colts, who are reckoned little inferior to High Caste, had to strike their colours to the iillv, who had them beaten all the way. It was a great, performance on tlie part of the winner. Submission began smartest and had charge from Fils de Vaals, Ueaulivro, Silver Stick, Nora Gregor, Beau Vile and ISaran, half a mile from home. Beaulivre came up on the outside ol Submission to challenge the leader entering tin l straight with Silver Stick and Beau Vito, who was on the fence, coming through behind them. Submission finished on in great style to win hv a, head from Beaulivre, with Bean Y'ite, who had drawn the rails hut was not so well placed early in the running. a length awuv third. Next came Silver Stick and Gayest Son. Submission beat one of the strongest field that have ever lined up for the Produce Stakes. SUDAN’S HACK PLATE. Finishing with a strong run on the inside from sixth position entering the straight, Sudan got a lucky decision hv a head from Bed Witch in the North Island Hack Plate. The favourite's success gave New Zealand’s leading horseman, W. J. Broughton, his second win for the day. Ftsel and Sudan were smartest to begin from Birkologv. but Veil Prior ran up to join the leader entering the back, and then Barotonga made a forward move, this pair being in charge half a mile from home. Barotonga was in charge entering the straight from Yed Prior, Birkology. Settlement, Bed AViteli, Sudan and Windsor Chief, but at the distance the pacemaker began to close up quickly. Bod Witch came fast on the outside and appeared to. bo in front wide out at flic post, hut Sudan had come up on the inside, and was given the verdict. Birkologv, running another good race at the meeting, hung on for third. Settlement was fourth, followed by Barotonga, Yed Prior and Windsor Chief. Barotonga’s showing indicated that he can be expected to improve in his next race. RACE CALL'S COURSE RECORD. Race Call, the first day's open sprint winner, was responsible for a great effort in winning the Longbum Handicap in time which is a course record. Both he and Big Dook, who was second, were in the middle of the field entering the straight. Old Surrey made the pace to the home turn from Aureus, Silver River and Lady Ina. The latter went to the front at the distance, but was immediately challenged by Race Call, who had come up fast on the outside, and forged ahead to win a very fast race by a length. Big Dook finished on from ninth position entering the straight and worried Lady Ina. out of second money by a head. Top Row got up on the outside for fourth, Old Surrey having weakened into fifth place to lie followed home by Wildliower, Homily and Taitaru. LAST TO TR.EBOR.

Trebor made amends for his first day’s failure when ho won tho Adderstono Handicap to score his sixth win in seven starts. His future racing will be in open company, as he was running out his hack nominations. Trebor_ was lying seventh entering the straight, but swooped down on the leaders with his characteristically strong finish, which he did not produce on the first dav.

Te Htiia and Sternchase (the favourite) made the pace to the straight, where Eurotas, AYhito Gold, Roy.nl Pageant Barabbas and Trebor wore in behind them in that order. Trebor soon put tho issue lieyond doubt, coming on to win by a length from AVhite Gold, with Sternchase a similar distance back third. Te Huia was fourth, followed by Royal Pageant and Barabbas.
