POLITIC AI TOLERANCE.
(To tlie Editor.) Sir, — F and others have boon wondering what has become of Mr Christensen; lie must have faded out like a midsummer night's dream regarding "Businessman's” correspondence. 1 would like to .call to mind one or two lines of his remarks in that correspondence—such as that lie prefers to he in this prison of his fancy because lie claims (o get more of the good things of life in it. What a fishy one, sir! The country's national income is receding and the people are Ivcing carried on the top of a wave of inila.ted currency; saint' amount, in circulation apparently, but which buys less, so it's rather queer that one can buy more with less purchasing power, because ol price increases. There was never a crested wave without a. trough in the sen. and the figurative trough lies ahead of fair New /calami. Hence the Ministerial talks up and down Now Zealand regarding more production, even the Premier exhorting the public regarding this matter from the screen of picture theatres, which political advertising comes out of the public pocket. It would appear to me that “Business Man’s’’ remark regarding the walersiders l>oing due lor a clean tii> long ttgo was proved up to the hilt, when some 800 watersiders were dismissed for aggravated “go slow” tactics, during 2-1 working hours when they loader! on shipboard less than half the usual amount for the period. This “go-slow'” police has been in oncration for some 2d years. It is significant that the wharf labourers wore addressed by two Socialist inemIkts of Parliament, also by Mr liol> erts, who is out and out for job control. but the men were just a little prior with this move, so dir Huberts exhorts them to return to the job. There will be the one to name the time to move in this matter. “Business Man’s” remark regarding the liberty and space given lo Socialists in tile “dailies” lias been often observed by open-minded people. On the other hand 1 often read the Labour Standard, and I have never once seen anything of a tolerant nature in its articles towards the Dominion dailies, but remarks of a derogatory nature continuously in its columns, and this will lie the" absolutely one-sided propaganda that will be dished up to the people when the promised Labour papers get going, and those who apparently are subscribing to this fund will have their outlook on political matters more biassed than ever as the result of the propaganda, that will Ivc found in their columns. Between news control and the control of the air it will be a virtual dictatorship as to what illo people shall have. I notice in the latest Labour Standard Hon. W. Nash has some very caustic things to say about the daily Press, which can engender nothing else than what is termed by his party “class consciousness,” which in turn breeds bitterness towards those of a different political outlook. Bogarding Mr Savage's remark when the Social Security Act (or Socialist security) was before the House, “I can sec no crime in making provision for the aged people,” of course there never was any before Hie Socialists got into power. In this connection f would like to point out that in the depression a man and wife received *’!2s (>d weekly, from April 1 they will receive 35s if the wife is under GO years of age. This 'includes 5s for the wife. [ wonder what Air Christensen had in mind when he was so joyous of the prospect of getting more of the good things of life. —1 am, etc., AJAX 11.
