Detailed results: Rev. E. W. liurgin beat Mrs Braun, 26 —11; Mesdames S. Newth and G. Walls lost to Mesdames Moynihan and Roach, 16—26. 'The wedding was solemnised at All Saints’ Church on January 18 when Hazel

| Victoria, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. IT. Spring, of Poxlon, was married to Leslie John, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Reilly, of Rangiu-afiia. Rev. E. W. Burgh was the officiating'minister. Escorted by her father, the bride looked charming in a model gowD of ivory French satin, embossed with gold. It was designed on slimfitting lines, the bodice featuring the new heart-shaped neckline and sleeves puffed at the shoulders and tight-fitting at the wrists, and the skirt (larod from the waistline to form a slight train. Her beautiful tulle veil, which was embroidered in gold, was held in place with a coronet of orange blossom and she carried a sheaf of cream gladioli, roses, and chrysanthemums. Attending the bride was hor sister, Miss Fiona Spring, who was frocked in Nile green Swiss embroidered organza made with a tightly fitting Ixxlico with full puff od sleeves. Miss Deli Snrimr. cousin of the

bride, and Barry Bowater, nephew of the bride, were trainbearors. When the happy couple loft later by car for the East Coast the bride travelled in a navy blue wool georgette edge to edge coat over a mermaid green model frock. i The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday night and was presided over by the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau). The finance committee reported that the gas compensation claims had given the committee considerable worry. The committee had borne in mind the fact that the money awarded as compensation had to be collected from the ratepayers in some form or another, and that for many years the consumers had purchased gas from the

council at a price far below tho cost of production, so (hat every consumer had ; already received a very substantial subI sidy at tho expenso of the goneral body of j ratepayers. Some difficulty had been ex-

j pcrienced in so far as the position of tenant and landlord was concerned, but the cora- | mitteo was now able to award definite I amounts to the various claimants which, although considerably less than the amount ■ demanded in many cases, would undoubtedly go fax towards meeting any incon- ; venicnce that might havo been occasioned through the closing of the gasworks. The council would shortly be asked to set its policy for the coming financial year on ono of the two following alternatives: —(1*) That a fixed sum bo made available to the I various committees, and thoA they bo asked to frame a programme of works within that limit.; (2) that estimates he prepared by the works and reserves committees and rates levied to meet the expenditure. The l report was adopted. The works committee recommended the following works to be undertaken by the No. 13 men:—Attention to all sand cuttings and drifts in tho borough—Avenue Road, in front of the tennis courts; a deviation to bo made in Union Street at Salmon’s corner, the road to be straightened as much as possible; prompt attention to noxious weeds on the borough roads, sections, etc., including Nyc Street; con I‘tinuation of Baker Street north, the road I to be formed" and general imporvements madej an inspection to he made of gas pipes and if worth salvaging, to be used to convey water from the river to the swimming baths : in viow of the early comple tion by tho Highways Board of Johnston, Russell, and Robinson Streets, it was recommended that the tar-sealing of Jenks, Cook, and Thynnc Streets bo done, thus completing this section; tho balance of the Johnston Street footpath to the Convent School to be complctod, followed by the tar-sealing of tho balance of the footpath on the western side of Main Street. The report was adopted and it was decided that priority be given to the sealing of .Duncan Street and Ravensworth Place, and that .Tonka, Cook, and Thynne Streets be soaled in that order. The Bainofise and Oroua Downs School Committees wrote asking for the free use of the baths for the tuition of pupils in swimming.—Granted. It was decided to repair tho council house in Avenue Road, install drainage and electric light, and to let same to Mr I R. Simpson. *
