ANNUAL COUNTY PICNIC. (From Our Own Correspondent;. SANSON, Feb. 14. favoured with a perfect clay, the annual picnic held by the staff of the Manawatu County Council at the Totara Reserve on Saturday, proved a great success. A party of 140 left Sanson early in the morning and bad a pleasurable trip up the Pohangina Valley, the charming panorama being admired. Tile party picnicked under the bush on the riverside. Numerous races were held,, and several competitions added to the enjoyment, while bathing was a popular attract ion; afternoon tea, iod creams, sott drinks, fruit and lolly scrambles were provided. The picnickers were kept in constant touch with the evonis by means of a loud speaker equipment operated by the secretary of tho committee (Mr S. L. Kent). Following tho tug-of-war contests the chairman of the council (Mr W. E. Barker) said it was his pleasure to present the trophy known as the “Bono of Contention” to the winners. lie noticed that, the winners were a new body of men and he congratulated them on their stout effort, Air Barker presented the shield to Air D. G. Hammond, the captains of the crushing plant team. Mr Hammond said his team were pleased to regain the trophy once more and congratulated tho previous holders, the drivers, on their effort to retain it. Air Barker called on Mr A. Hopwood, of Palmerston North, to accept a framed photograph taken of himself at. the last picinic, as a small token of recognition of his services so willingly rendered each picnic day in keeping the “billy” boiling. Mr Barker said that Air Hopwood had ahvays taken a keen interest in the social affairs of the staff. Mr Hopwood said ho appreciated the kind gesture and assured all that, lie was always pleased to attend tho functions. The Palmerston North Y.M.C.A. were only too pleased to allow the picnic to be Hold on their grounds, which he thought all would agree were ideal. Altich of tho success of tho day was due to the untiring efforts of the committee, Alcssrs H. V. Bond. E. J. Davcy. \V. George, L. A. Sadler and the secretary (Mr S. L. Kent).
