A GOOD MARI.

LADY MONTANA’S FORM

LIST OF SUCCESSES.

(By “Spectator.")

Considering- that it is only eighteen months since she won u maiden event at Marlon, Lady Montana must Ijo regarded as an exceptionally good mare after her three latest performances in winning the Alarton Cup, the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, and being beaten by a nose by Haughty Winner in the Summer Handicap at Trcnthani, all in fields of top class.

Lady Montana, who, by the way, has been withdrawn from the Ruhiatua Oup, lias now a record of nino wins and fifteen minor piaoings in 53 starts for £2440 in stakes, so that she has been, very useful in her short but rather strenuous racing career to date. She was a. good handicap three-year-old last season, when she also won at Trcnthani, and she had seconds there and at Riccarton in good races in the spring. After winning the Marton Cup, she was unlucky not to take the Aldworth Stakes at that fixture, falling over Old Surrey when moving up fast in a good position close to the rails. A four-year-old well-made bay mare, Lady Montana belongs to a good winning family. She is by Lord Quex out of the Kilboy—Conceit mare Kilceit, the dam previously of Walton Park and Chaste, and Kilceit was a half-sister to Egotism (dam of Pride and Jaloux), Bumptious, St. Anncs (dam of Soho), and Oddity (dam of the Wellington Cup winner Royal Artist). Conceit was a daughter of tho imported Ladas mare Lady Wayward 11, who also left that stout horse Emperador, a fine weight-carrier who won over £7OOO in stakes. Acceptors at Pahiatua.

Additional acceptors for the Pahiatua Racing Club’s meeting are as follow: Bailance Iliglnvcight Handicap: Sir Nigel, 10.4. Eketaliuna Handicap: Solaria, 7.6. Filetto is Speedy.

Filotto, winner of the Siberian Hack Handicap at Ashhurst, is a very speedy sort. The Siegfried marc won easily all the way over tho same distance at Marton, and subsequently ran well at Trenlliani. Yed Prior Improved.

Yed Prior should have her turn soon. The Surveyor filly lias improved greatly since coming to Awapuni from the Waikato. She ran a good race at Trcntham and would probably have lx-on in a place in the Manawatu Gorge Hack Cup at Ashlmrst but for being practically left at tho start.

A Nightmare Filly. March Easy js a three-year-old maiden who showed sonic pace at Ashhurst without getting into the money in the Novice Stakes. She is by Night, march from that former good mare Civility, and thus has the breeding to endow her with speed. Win for Martara.

Following liia second in tho Viceroy’s Cup, tho former Palnioiston North horse Martara easily won tho Maephorson Cup (1 e miles) at Calcutta, on December 17. Carrying 9.3, and ridden by the Australian horseman J. Simpson, lie ran the distance in 2.34 1-5.

Royal Chief Recovered. Royal Chief lias recovered from the bruised heel that kept him out of bis Trentham engagements and he i» continuing his preparation. Ho will probably have his next race in the James llazlctt Memorial Gold Cup and he rnay bo nominated also for the Dunedin Cup. Form Disappointing.

Te Morehu’s form was disappointing in the Gorge Hack Cup at Ashhurst. Me appeared to be running along nicely three furlongs from home, but could not do better than get fourth. He was a winner both at New Plymouth and Stratford during the holidays. Bred on ideal jumping lines, this close relation to Nappcr, Awake, Cynical Kid, and other good hurdlers should later be a good proposition over the battens.

A Profitable Purchase. Sold on the first day of tho Trentham meeting to Mr P. GYirtis, of Christchurch, for llOgns, Drachma, who has been finishing on better in his races of late, must be considered a bargain. Running second in the Trial Plate, he immediately returned £6O to his new owner, and followed this up with £2lO for the winner’s share of the stake in the Kelburn Handicap on the final day.

High Caste’s Price. A price of 7000gns. is reported to have been placed by his owner, Mr A. J. McGovern, on High Caste, who will be thoroughly tested in Australia. He will race in the V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, the Ascot Vale Stakes, the A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, and the Champagne Stakes. Aspire and Aurania, who did well in Melbourne, are engaged in these events also and so is Esperanto, tho best of -the Sydney division. Density’s Two Wins. Density’s two successes at Trentham were full of merit, for she resumed racing only last week after having been off the scene for three months, owing to an accident while on a trip ‘to Dunedin in October. She was a winner at her fifth and last start as a two-year-old last season, and in. a single start at the Grand National meeting in August she was beaten only by Lady Leigh, who has since won in open oompany, so her previous form was encouraging. Not Suited by Course.

Thrasos has not run a bad race since he commenced his career this season, but ho has been very unlucky, and tho first time ho strikes a roomy course with a long straight he will keep Uio opposition busv. Since being galloped on at Woodville he had had only one race prior to the Ashhurst meeting, finishing a good third at Marton. The big-striding Thracian colt could not negotiate the bends in the Komako Hack Handicap, in which he was drawn on the outside of the field, at Ashhurst, but finished a close fourjh. His next outing will be ill the Konini Hack Handicap, of seven furlongs, at Pahiatua on Friday.

Lady ina’s Record. Lady Ina, the well-performed Awapuni sprinter who has now iiad 15 wins and 19 minor places in bl starts for £3051 in

stakes, including' £560 earned this season, has a remark, able record on tho Trentham track, where her piaoings at the recently concluded summer meeting exactly paralleled those which she had there in January of 1938, prior to which she had won two hack races on the course, where she also won the Suburban Handicap last autumn. She was due to win her second Metropolitan Handicap, as prior Lo that she had run three close successive seconds, two of them at Marion.

Jump Into Birdcage. There was a sensation early in the Murumarua Hurdles, won at Thames by the outsider Queen Lu, who was not fancied because of recent soreness, but paid a big dividend. When leading the field by several lengths, Ngakuru ran off at _ the second hurdle in the straight and jumped the picket fence into the birdcage. Strathire fell at the third fence, his rider, J. Day, suffering a broken collarbone.

Prominent in Highweights. Awapuni horses were prominent in the liighweight events at Trentham. Much improved since joining G. IV. New’s string after the Levin meeting in the spring, Diamond Cutter won on tho first day and Bumble, trained by Mrs A. W. McDonald, won on the second day. Bumble, who won a mile hack event at Waipukurau on Boxing lj)ay after having shown signs at Woodvillc of returning to form, was olf the scene last season and has not had a deal of racing. lie is well enough bred to win more races, as ho is a six-year-old half-brother by Captain Bunsby to Admiral Drake and Francis Drake. Golden Ridge, who was a little unlucky, was second each day in tho highweights in both his starts at Trentham. Ho is from the same stable as Lady. Ina, at Awapuni.
