STREET INCIDENT.
RABBI ASSAULTED. Per Press Association. AVELLJNGTON, Jan. 20. Admitting pulling the beard of a Jewish rabbi in an Auckland Street, Roy Baxter Gaulton, aged 28, a labourer, was cliarged before Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., and pleaded guilty to assault. Sub-Inspector Dempsey said that on November 25 Rabbi Hanesh Law was walking along Pitt Street. Auckland, towards Karangahape Road when defendant, who was then the subject of a prohibition order and had had some liquor, met him and pulled his beard. The rabbi remonstrated and defendant went away, but came back with a companion, and the companion pulled the rabbi’s beard. The rabbi endeavoured to hold the two men unsuccessfully, but while following them obtained the help of a constable. Defendant and other two men entered a boarding house, and the rabbi positively identified defendant. Defendant was allowed bail at Auckland, but did not appear the following day, and was later arrested at AVellington. Ho bad already been dealt with for the breach of the prohibition order. A fine of £2 was imposed for assault, to be paid within fourteen days.
