GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

C.’ANTERBURY SUPPLIES,

Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 20.

Business in the Canterbury grain and produce markets is taking up again slowly, but it wilt bo another two weeks before it reaches any considerable volume. Interest at present is confined mainly to wheat, oats and ryegrass. Wheat threshing lias boon held up by the heavy winds. Most of the threshing done has been in North Canterbury. 9be quality of (lie wheat is very good, but nothing definite can be said yet about yield. It is considered in some quarters that it will be on the light side, but it is too early to form any reliable opinion. Tho oats sample is excellent —good, hard, bright stuff and very dry. Gartons, of course, comprise the greater part of the offerings at present, but merchants have received one or two samples of Algerians. Quotations for A Cartons are 2s 7d to 2s 8d and for B’h 2s 5d to 2s 6d.Algerians are ((noted at up to 2s lOd. The ryegrass season has begun very disappointingly, poor germination being the trouble. Most of the samples have run out at, between 20 and 50 per cent, ill the early threshed crops. Better results are hoped for from the luter crop. Nominal quotations for perennial (good germination) arc 3s and for Italian 2s 6d. There is no uew season’s white clover yet and the quotation for old season’s remains at Is a lb. Thcro is no interest in red clover. The weather has been almost ideal for the potato crop, which is looking very well. The acreage planted is less than last season but the reduction is not substantial. Tho markets are hare of good chaff.
