NORTH ISLAND TOURNEY. FIRST DAY’S PLAY. MASTERTON, Jan, 20. Beautiful weather favoured the opening of the North Island tennis championships, being played in conjunction with the AVairarapa association’s championship and handicap tournament, on the Masterton Club's courts to-day. There were no major surprises. P• Hawksworth, the AVairarapa champion. easily won his singles against M. McLeod, of Martinborough ; MPerkins hail no difficulty in beating A. Mahupnka: and G. S.
