BOWLS CARNIVAL

PAIRS TITLE DECIDED.' ANCHOR AND ROBINSON WIN, Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 20. Tlie great interest being taken in tile New Zealand Bowling Association’s championships was evidenced at the Carlton green to-day, when more Ihan 1000 spectators, many of whom were accommodated on a special stand borrowed from tlie Auckland Tennis Association, waited till alter 6 o’clock to witness the closing singes of the competitions. Fine weather and the absence of wind were conducive to good bowling and added greatly to the enjoyment of the spectators. The final of the pairs event was docided to-day, J. S. Anchor and AV. Robinson (Hamilton) beating L. Balfour and I, Stephenson (Gisborne) by 2-3 points to 16. The contest was close lip to the sixteenth end. but after that the Hamilton pair asserted itself, and moved to an easy victory. A great struggle was witnessed in the seventh round game in the singles between AV. Franks (Balmoral) and J. S. Martin (Ellerslie), and both were frequently applauded for shots of outstanding excellence. There was little to choose between the players up to the twentieth, where Franks secured an advantage and won by a two-point margin. In the semi-final A. Connew (Mt. Albert) secured a runaway victory over H. Cowper (Ponsonby). Franks and Connew, both one-lifers, will meet in the final to-morrow.

The seventh and eighth rounds of post-section play in the rinks event were also decided, and Franks (two lives) and G. Dearc. Carlton (one life), will con lest the final 10-morrow. The former has given a brilliant display throughout the tournament, and has recorded an outstanding effort in surviving to the final stages in two of the competitions. FINAL DESCRIBED.

The excitement in the pairs final between Baffonr and Stephenson and Anchor and Robinson came on the third head, when Stephenson drove and look the jack into the ditch for four shots. Robinson was equal (o the occasion, however, and drew the absolute.

Stephenson’s driving, which is a feature of liis play, was again in evidence on the fourth head, when lie removed the Hamilton counters with his last bowl to score a two.

The Hamilton team opened up a gap of seven points when a four was secured on the seventh head. Balfour was failing to hold Anchor. Robinson saved well on the tenth head, when lie drew in to cut out three Gisborne shots.

The Gisborne lead, Balfour, had by now found a better length, and was matching bowl for bowl with Anchor. Stephenson continued to drive accu-l-atelv, and on the 11th head chipped out the shot howl for one shot, to make the score 13—10 in favour of the Hamilton pair. Robinson got a useful two on the next head by means of sound drawing. Fast work was again resorted to by Stephenson on the 13th, and he picked up two points. AVit-h only six heads to play. Hamilton’s prospects were bright, the, score standing at 16—12 in their tavour. Stephenson, in driving at the head, removed all his own woods and left three of the opposition's howls on the green. Robinson drew in a fourth with his last bowl. The score was now 23—16 in Hamilton's favour. Only one more head was played, which -produced a single for Robinson. Anchor gave a really good leading display, and held the shot 14 times to Balfour’s six. It is noteworthy that a A\ aikn.to pair have won the title on the last throe occasions the Dominion tournament has been held in Auckland. Beveridge and Pilkington (Hamilton) won in 1031 and 1933.
