SOCIAL SECURITY BILL
SECOND READING DEBATE ENDS MINISTER ANSWERS CRITICISMS' The conclusion of the second reading debate on the Social Security Bill was reached in the House of Representatives, last evening, when the measure was accorded the second reading without a voice being raised in opposition. Winding up the debate, which had extended over six sittings, the Minister in charge of the Bill (Hon. W. Nash) spoke for two hours, replying to the various points that had been raised by members of the Opposition. The Minister expressed confidence in the productive capacity of the country to meet all costs arising out of the Government’s proposed health and superannuation services. The Bill would remove the obligation from both the giver and the receiver of charity to give it or accept it. The House went into Committee to commence the discussion of the 139 clauses of the measure.
