BUSINESS GIRLS’ CLUB.
TALK BY MRS HANSEL. There was a good attendance at the Business Girls’ Club’s fortnightly luncheon, yesterday, to hear Mrs! A. E. Hansel give an interesting informal talk on her recent trip to Honolulu. Mrs W. T. Royal presided and extended a welcome to Mrs Hansel and to two new members, Misses M. Tottman and I. Ryan, also to a former member, Miss E. Gilchrist, who v. r rs a visitor. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames M. H. Oram (president), M. Aitchison, and Misses D. Newth and Bennett.
In describing her voyage Mrs .Hansel said that the boat left Auckland on a cold, wet, windy day, but the passage was very comfortable. Her cabin was decorated in green and gold and bad a bed instead of a bunk. At tlie end of two days winter clothes were discarded and after leaving Suva deck sports started. Pago Pago—American Samoa—was delightfully green and picturesque. It was here that the scene of Somerset Maugham’s “Rain” was laid. Only one of the eight principal Hawaiian islands. Oahu, was visited. This was the third largest and Honolulu was the capital. The landing at Honolulu was rather sad owing to the Mayor of that city having died on the way. However, the funeral was very impressive. Surfing and sunbathing' took up most of the time during the visit. There were very few fullblooded owing to frequent intermarriage with other races. Describing various dishes, she said the Hawaiian people’6 food was cooked in the ground with hot stones and tea leaves packed with earth. The food was delicious but most people did not car* for poi, the national di6h made from taro roots. The people were very hospitable and the visitors had had a most enjoyable time. The American women she had seen were very well groomed. A vote of thanks was conveyed to the speaker on the motion of Mrs Royal.
