JUNIOR FOOTBALL.
The local junior grade football fixtures were finalised for the season on Saturday, when United registered what was almost a last-minute victory over the local team. The latter had secured a lead of one point, due principally to the splendid play of E. McNeil, who drop-kicked two goals in the second spell. At half-time the. game stood 7—o in favour of the visitors. Andrews drop-kicked a goal. Barker registered a try, and in the concluding stages of the game Hughes landed a penalty goal. The match ended 10—8. The home team made a better showing in the second half, and in the game generally, McNeil and Russell were very conspicuous. There were several hold-ups during the course of the game, owing to players being hurt. At the beginning of the second spell, Cooksley (United') was disabled and
had to retire. His place' was taken by Collins. -The referee was Mr A. Neville.
A CURTAIN-RAISER.
As a curtain-raiser to the junior fixture, a return" match was played on the Recreation Ground between a third grade team and one consisting of the employees of the McLean Street training stables. The game, which was very closely contested, _ was won by the third grade side by 19 points to 18. Mr J. Hutchm was referee. For the winners, tries were scored by P. Grout, R. Leach, and J. Beale, the major points being added by L. Pilcher and Leach. For the Turf representatives four tries were secured, three being converted. The points were compiled by Haywood, Burlace, and Gilmore. _ -
