WAR FUNDS COUNCIL.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 25. The expenditure of £SOOQ on relief for the ensuing year was approved at the annual meeting of the National War Funds Council yesterday. The balance-sheet and statement of accounts showed that the expenditure exceeded the income by £8450, compared with £14,471 for the previous period. Unless the expenditure were reduced the council would exhaust its capital in six to eight years. The accumulated fund was now £79,147 ]6s 2d and the trust funds were £9038 11s lOd. A report on general relief showed that £10,956 had been expended, including assistance to overseas soldiers and unemployment grants. This was below the previous year. Assistance to Imperial men also showed a decrease, due to a grant having been received from the United Services Fund in England by New Zealand. In a discussion is was pointed out that the council’s funds were primarily raised for the benefit of sick and wounded soldiers, and not for unemployment relief. This scheme of relief had been brought into effect in 1927, and up to 1938 £111.456 had been accorded to the sick and unemployed men, with the result that the liquid capital of tho council for all purposes had been reduced to £74,000.
