DRIVE ON HANKOW. CHINESE TOWN THREATENED. YANGTSE RIVER MINED. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegrapii.—Copyright.) Deceived August 24, 9.35 a.m. TOKIO, Aug. 23. The Japanese, in tlieir drive on Hankow, have captured Mataychen, threatening the Chinese key position of Juickang.

Japanese warships on the lliver Yangtse .are heavily covering the advance, for which reason the Chinese have copiously mined the river above Wusueh.

A Shanghai message says that squadrons of Japanese war spent the day systematically battering the Chinese defences on the various fronts on the Yangtse River. Sixty thousand reinforcements were simultaneously rushed up to support the new offensive.

The town of Juichang is just west of Iviukiang, which was recently captured by tlie Japanese. It is not actually on the Yangtse, but is near a small lake. Wusueh is on the river, further west still from Iviukiang, towards Hankow. FIGHT AGAINST"EPIDEMIC. ' AUSTRALIAN CONTRIBUTION. . CANBERRA, Aug. 23. At the request of the Health Department of the League of Nations the Australian Government has contributed 500,000 doses of anti-cholera serum to assist in the fight against the epidemic now raging in China. The serum is worth £4OOO.
