HARD LABOUR.
A CHRISTCHURCH CASE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 27. Struck by a motor-car after running out of a city store where he was detected in an attempted theft, John Black, aged 57, received injuries necessitating his admission to hospital. The incident occurred on June 14, and this morning Black appeared in the Magistrate’s Court charged with stealing a woman’s hand bag valued at 15s lid. Black pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.
Sub-luspecfor Packer said that Black went into the store and took the hand bag when he thought no one was looking, and made for the door. He had, however, been noticed by a shop attendant; she went after Black and stopped him. Black offered to pay for the bag, but when the attendant went back behind the counter Black made a break. He rushed out of the door and bounded on to the street, where he was struck by a motor-car. He was injured and taken to hospital. Black was not represented by counsel, but from the dock said that he had not known what he was doing. The woman’s hand bag would have been no good to him-
