OBITUARY.

MAJOR-GENERAL LAYE. Received June 27, 12.25 p.m. LONDON, June 26. The death has occurred of MajorGeneral Joseph Henry Laye, C.V.O. C. 8., retired. Major-General Laye was born at Auckland, New Zealand, in 1849. His mother was a daughter of General Leslie Dean Pitt, Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand. Major-General Laye entered the 90th Light Infantry as ensign in 1867 and was made a captain in 1878. He served throughout the Kaffir War, 1877-78, and the Zulu War in 1879. Tie commanded the First Battalion Scottish Rifles, 1889-93, and was general officer commanding the Infantry Brigade in Gibraltar in'l9os.
