RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE BRIGHTER THAN EVER. (By “Spectator.”) 1 , Catalogue’s holiday was only a brief one, for the Lord Quex gelding does not do well when turned, out- and seems to thrive best in work. Ho is back on the tracks at Awapuni and is in nice order for a further ' preparation for the spring handicaps. i Ineligible for Trial Plate. .' Valantua, who has been entered for the Trial Plato at Wellington, is not eligible. He won a race at Otautau on April 9 worth . £52. to the winner, which -is £2 above the limit impeded in the conditions of tiic race. To Race at Trentham. W. H. Dwyer has Middle and Gaily engaged at Trentham next month, the former figuring in hurdle events. The Centrepiece gelding has been schooled* over the battens, and has shaped ill promising style. Marie’s Acre Resumes. . The addition of Marie's Acre to the active brigade at Ellerslie will create a fair amount of interest, ns this well-bred colt promises to reach tho highest class. He has not raied for several months, but his form throughout tho 6pring and summer meetings was good aiid consistent. Jolly Beggar. At Riccarton this week interest was centred on Jolly Beggar when ho was sent out to jump eight of the steeplechase fences, but ho slipped and swerved badly aU the first, and, although he did not fall, his rider, O. Ridgway, was unable to retain his seat after a gallant effort. Jolly Beggar was soon captured, and it was intended tcf-send him out again, but he cast a shoe and the task had to be postponed. ’ Southland Rider’s Success. When Contract won the hurdle race at Greymouth ho was ridden by J. W. Bromby, Sort of the well-known Invercargill trainer R. Bromby. Both Broniby and his mount wore haying their, first experience of hurdle racing and there wes the further coincidence that it was the first brush hurdle event to be decided at Greymouth. Bromby, who was apprenticed to the Riverton trainer, R. McKay, when in" Southland, is now attached to’’ M. Conza’s stable. Finished for the Season. The stablemates Knight of Australia and’ Bonnybelio have stood up to their racing in good style, though they will not bo seen out again until the now season opens. It was intended to give Knight of Australia a course of schooling over hurdles this winter, but tho idea lias been abandoned for the time being. Wcc Pat, in the same stable, has come on very fast during the short time she has bceip in work, and still retains her speed. Whether this mare will be capable of staging a cotnc-back remains to be seen;, still, in tho event of her doing so, she'will be a decided acquisition to tile jumpers. Melbourne Cup' Entries. Now Zealand horses entered for the Melbourne Cup are Catalogue, Sly Pox, Amigo, Cerne Abbas, Royal Chief Flood Tide, Cheval de Voice, Dictate, Jack Tar, Queen of Song, Strctto, and Willie Win. Most of these horses have also been nominated for the Caulfield Cup. The most notable, omission is Wotan, who. won tho race in record time two years ago. Last, year’s, winner, The Trump, ri among tho entries. Australian Opinion of Richards. Gordon Richards'lias ridden ,in 10 Derbies without a win and according to Australian racing men who have recently returned from England they are. not surprised. Mr E. E. Jolly, who has frequently been a purchaser of .Now Zealand yearlings at the annual sales, said he, told lus friends* Pasch- wbuld* not. win with Richards up. “Richards js purely a sprint rider and nothing ho is on ha 5 a chance .over a distance unless through sheer superiority'of the horse. Of hundreds of classic races over a distance he has won only four.” Another returned Australian said Richards would never win a Derby unless he were mounted on Phar Lap. GRAND NATIONAL . TROTTING. SPECIAL RACE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 2-4. . A special race for trotters and pacers has been included in the programme for the August meetin" of the New Zealand ’ Metropolitan Trotting Club. The prize is £BOO and the distance two miles. , The field will consist of < six pacers and six trotters selected by the club from nominated horses. A special handicap lias been arranged, the trotters beginning from scratch and the pacers from 72 yards behind. The contest will serve in a measure to decide the debated question of stamina in the respective classes. TROTTING - NOTES. PROMISING THREE-YEAR-OLD. (By “Square-Gaiter.) The promising northern three-.ycar-old Ucntiku has commenced light work at Cambridge with. a view to competing at tho early meetings. Ho shows all the attributes of a class pacer, and many judges will bo astray if ho does not perform creditably in tho forthcoming season. -- Parrish Belle Exercises.. The Auckland marc Parrish Belle. . is being kept in easy qxorciso at Addington and may not race again until tho Grand National nicctkig. Addition to Team. J. Seibel has taken in'hand a two-ycar-old gelding by Grattan Loyal from Lady Brent, the dam of Subsidy. Tho novice is not far advanced to this stage, but he is shaping - well. Indianapolis, In. F. J. Smith’s opinion the topnotchers in New Zealand are equal to tho best, .in America. He contends .that the 2min 0 2-ssec put up by Indinapblis an a track not conducive to fast time would equal lniin 58scc or better on a mile track in America. ! ." On Easy List. Coquette and Graham Direct, two members of. F. G. Holmes’s team, have been placed on the easy list, but it is" unlikely that either will remain out of work for long. Tho former, a two-year-old, has proved herself an attractive pacer, both with and without hopples, and she requires only time to develop into a useful winner. Disappointing. Earlier in tile season Anna AA T oug appeared likely to prove a useful mare among the improvers, but she has failed to race as well as expected, and she is' still listed among tho maiden performers'; Recently she was put back in work again, this time under A. Cranston at Addington, and it is hoped that she will display improved form for a long spell from the tracks. Enjoying a Change,

Several members of J. Fraser's team arc being treated io short spells at the moment, but Indianapolis, Golden Eagle. Bittersweet, Rongomai,, Grand Mogul, and Great Admiral are all-being kept in trim by a course of road work, seldom being on the tracks. With tho exception of Rongomai, ..who has returned to work after a Spell, tho others have all engaged in recent racing, and are in good order. However, with August racing m sight,' it was not considered wise to let them * icse •thoir present condition, and they will’.be ready to do useful tasks again when’ the tracks are better suited to . fast. work.

A Unique Performance. Although the best racehorses do not al-

ways make th* best etud propositions, one who has left her mark as 'a pacer appears likely to prove a most successful brood mare. She is Waitaki Girl, winner of innumerable races and one oh tho most brilliant pacers over bred in the Dominion, "i. Be; fore retiring to the stud in 1930 Waitaki Girl, who was particularly partial, to soft feoing, won over various distances and held the unique distinction of having won the King George Handicap at Addington on, four consecutivo occasions. As this is- oho of the most important events in the trotting calendar tho merit of her record is apparent. Hor best times included: Two miles in 4.22 and one mile and a quarter in 2.41 3-5. Only - seven marcs have succeeded in bettering 4,22, for two miles, and they arc: Silver do Ore, Regal Voyage, DilWorth, Mountain Dell (4.19 4-5), Parisicnrio (4.20 3 : 5),. Free Advice (4-21), and Enawah (4.21 2-5). Now Waitaki Girl is represented on the • race track by Waitaki Pdwer, said to bo one of the speediest improvers up to a mile and a half in commission (lie has already taken a record of 3.15)'; and . Red Rangor, another. pacy customer with a. mile and a quarter in 2.41 2-5 to his credit.

A Unique FEAT. FOUR WINS IN TWO DAYS. Tho feat of Full o’ Scotch in winning throb hurdle races at one meeting lias been landed, and reference has been made; .to the fact thab other horses, • among thorn Explorer and Hounslow, equalled the. achievement. Now someone has remembered that a gclcling named Guiding Way wont one better by winning four races at a \Takapuna meeting in November/ 1916. Guiding Way’s finst appearance at a meeting was in a maiden hurdle rand, in .which his weight, 9.13, included a 51b allowance. About two hours later he woii the liri Handicap. Htirdlos, carrying 9.10, including a 71b ponalty. Oh the second day of the meeting Ini again \Von the maiden and the open hurdle races, carrying 10.9 (with a 51b allowance) in the former and 10.10 (including a 7b"penalty) in tile latter. Guiding Way raced in the- nomination of the executors of the late Mr C. Ross, and was ridden in the four races by J. Kelly. He, was second and third favourite ill his races on the first day and. first favourite each time he started on the second day.
