(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, June 22.
Present at the Borough Council meeting were the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Crs. A. E. Hyde, \\(. Clayton, 11. R. Lind, J. A; Roach, R. E. Downes, H. Aitchison, A. F. Birss, E. Perry. The dairy company drew attention to the sate of Stafford Street and asked that repairs •bo carried out, also that consideration _ be given, to scaling. The "works committee reported that necessary work was in. progress in Stafford Street,, but the question of scaling was left over to a later date. Writing with reference to State houses for Shannon, Mr L. G. Lowry, M.P., forwarded a letter he had received from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary pointing -out that Shannon has been placed on the list for consideration as soon a 6 possible. Arrangements had already been made regarding suitable land at Shnnon. “You can rest assured that the claim of Shannon will receive attention as soon as possible,” he said. The ranger reported that the streets recently had been free of stock. During the past six months he had impounded 38 head, removed off the streets 42 head. Cr. Hyde reported that the bqautifying committee had attended a meeting of representatives from local organisations when it was. resolved to carry out a beautifying scheme,, by planting up to 100 ornamental shrubs on the sides of streets. A subscription list had been circulated. and to date £l4 had been subscribed. The ground was being prepared for the planting of the shrubs which would be given the necessary protection for a few years. Cr. Lind reporte'd that 21 men were engaged under scheme 13. The widening of Julyan Street had been completed and work was now in progress in improving Graham Street, alto the shouldering of Stafford and Caplham Streets. When completed these, streets would be ready for sealing at some future date, Owing to material not being to. hand, work at. the water supply lead works had not been commenced. The Mayor entertained the councillors and staff to supper. • Mr and Mrs J. Chambers, of IChandallali, spent the week-end as the guests ot Mr and Mrs D. Cole. " A happy week-end was enjoyed by ou members of" the Wellington railway staff and friends-in Shannon. They wore motored to the MangahSo power house and -in the afternoon a railway fifteen tried issues with a local football team the visitors winning by . 3 points to nil. On Tuesday evening 30 players representing the Mangaorc and Shannon Cribbage Club journeyed to Bills to p'aya return game. Although beaten, the local players report an enjoyable trip.
