SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of'the District High. School Committee last evening was attended by Messrs R. R. John - Eton (chairman), A M. Pickering (secretary), E. J. Harding, R. Peebles, J. McPeak’, L. Williams and Rev. B. P. Williams. The headmaster (Mr E. W. Fossette) also attended. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Whittington and T. Smith. Mr H. S. M. Quigley,'a-member of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, solicited the support of the committee in his candidature for a further term. The chairman reported that Mr Whittington and himself had, on behalf of the committee, recorded the latter’s vote in favour of Mr Quigley. Their action was endorsed. It was resolved, on the motion ot the chairman, to order some football ■ and basketball material from the Palmerston North School SpQrts Association. Suitable'goal posts are also to be procured fbr the school. . The chairman brought the claims of the newly-formed sub-centre of the Red Cross Society under the notice of the meeting, on whose behalf he bespoke the co-operation of the school. He stated that Sister Canning of Dannevirke, was prepared to visit the school, with a view to organising a Red Cross class. The headmaster reported that a quantity of-firewood and coke had been delivered. The annual, road race had been held, and the entry, considering the weather, was quite good ine school desired to thank Mr J. Sullivan for his interest in donating the cup, also two officials. The primary roll is 254 and the average attendance • 232.4. On the secondary roll are 23 students, the average attendance being 20.6. -VALUE OF MILK. The approach of cold weather bus had an effect on the number of children consuming milk at the Woodville School, the list of those drinking it having dropped from 226 to 170. The headmaster reported that ail experiment of heating the milk on the_ radiators had been tried, resulting in an increase of 30 drinking the milk. He was firmly of the opinion that if the milk could be delivered at a higher temperature more children would take their ration, and the value.of the milk to children would he greater. The supply of cocoa to children having lunch at the school had been commenced, those desiring it contributing threepence per week. RED CROSS SOCIETY. At the residence of Mrs W. Galbraith, yesterday afternoon, a representative informal meeting of the re-cently-formed Red Cross Society was held. There were present Mrs R. R. Johnston (Mayoress), Mesdames James (secretary), Galbraith, Hurley, J. M. Graham (W.D.F.U.), and Miss Beat- , tic-. Sister Canning, of Dannevirke, outlined the procedure necessary in forming classes. She pointed out the necessity of being prepared in times tf epidemics, national calamities, etc. The meeting was enthusiastic, and a very determined effort is being made to start the classes, Sister Canning consenting tc commence the V.A.D. classes. Mrs Galbraith served afterneon tea. interesFln sport. At the meeting of the School Committee,. last evening, the chairman reported that the donor of the Sullivan Cup, competed for annually in a road race, felt aggrieved concerning the arrangements for the recent event, and had threatened to hand the trophies to the Athletic Club. Mr Sullivan, himself, he understood, had only been informed of the competition at somewhat short notice. A discussion -ensued on the fostering of greater interest in the development of athletic pastimes at the school. It was pointed out that the committee lihd always responded to auv requests for assistance in-this matter. On the motion of the chairman (Mr It. R. Johnston) and Mr Peebles it was ultimately resolved to make kindly representations to the staff cn the matter, suggesting that greater encouragement should be given to the sports department. PERSONAL. : Friends of Mrs J. H. Boyd, of the Manse, and formerly of Palmerston North, will regret to learn of the indifferent state of her health. _ She is leaving in a few days for Gisborne, where it is hoped the change will prove very beneficial. PAHIATUA. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Pahiatua Borough Council will hold a special meeting to consider the fbllowing matters: (1) To decide whether rthe council should take advantage of Hon. P. C. Webb’s offer to supply the whole of the cost of the labour for the purpose of reticulating the borough or bringing Mangahao water into the mains. (The consulting engineer, Mr H. F. Toogood, has been invited to be present and to submit up-to-date estimates of costs). (2) To decide how and what amount should he raised to supply materials for the employment of 14 men under the No. 13 Scheme, in the formation of footpaths, etc. (3) To receive prices for construction of theatre and municipal block. (4) To consider the question of submitting all proposals to the ratepayers. FIRE BOARD MEETING. . Mr A. W. White was in the chair at the quarterly meeting of the Pahiatua Fire Board yesterday, others present being: Messrs V. M. Edgar, K. Mason, W. A. Carthew, and J. W. Sturton. The brigade asked if the back of the fire station could be dug up and sown down in grass. Mr Edgar moved that the work be approved and the seed ( necessary be supplied.— . Carried. The superintendent (Mr W. H. Lawry) reported as follows:-—“The brigade attended three practices and three meetings. The roll at pres'ent is two officers, 13 firemen and two messengers. There is a vacancy for one fireman. : Thirty permits to burn j rubbish were issued during the quar-,

There were no fire calls during the quarter.” Mr Fraser, of the Tararua Electric Power Board, reported that the installation of the new alarm system would cost approximately £IBO for the complete Avork of installing 30 alarm boxes ; there Avould be four and a-halt miles of' wire to complete the job,, and the system would carr> a 6-voltycur-rent.
