FINE AND DISQUALIFICATION
CAR DRIVER PUNISHED. A fine of £ls, cancellation of his driver’s license, and an order prohibiting him from obtaining a fresh license for twelve months, was the penalty imposed by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a* motorist who pleaded guilty to being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car in the city, in the early hours of this morning. Daniel Andrew de Vantier, a motor mechanic, aged 27, appeared to answer a charge that, on May 27, at Palmerston North, while in a state of intoxication, he was in charge of a motor-car in Carroll Street. A "plea of guilty was entered. Senior-Sergeant J. Mclntyre, who conducted the prosecution, stated that at about 2.50 this morning Constable McJannett was called to a cafe where accused, after having had a meal, had refused to pay for it. He was very much intoxicated, and was being held by the proprietor. Accusetli'slwas persuaded to pay and he and jyrbmpanion proceeded to King Street. The constable watched their departure and subsequently heard the noise of a car engine. He cycled after the car, which was driven by accused, down King Street and subsequently to Carroll Street, where the vehicle was stopped. Accused was observed to slip a bottle of ale from his pocket into the car. An hour and three-quarters after the arrest accused was examined by a doctor and pronounced to be unfit to drive a car. Drink appeared to be the trouble of accused, which he seemed to recognise. The Magistrate imposed the penalty indicated above, with 23s costs. Accused was granted a month in to make the first payment of £lO, and two months in which to pay the balance.
