EUROPE WATCHFUL

SITUATION IN RUMANIA. POSSIBLE TRENDS. HERR HITLER PERTURBED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—■ Copyright.) Received April 22, 10.30 a.m. LONDON. April 21. The interesting situation in Rumania as a sequel to King Carol’s coup, when he proclaimed a virtual dictatorship, is being closely watched throughout Europe. King Carol for the moment has isolated Rumania from German influence, to Herr Hitler’s intense displeasure. It appeal’s that Maclaine Lupescu, who is fanatically anti-Nazi, has directed King Carol toward Britain and France, who are interested in Rumania’s vast oil deposits, on which Herr Hitler has long cast envious eyes. But it is generally overlooked _ that Rumania possesses a German minority of 750,000, in addition to 1,250,000 Hungarians who are loyal to Herr Hitler, providing ample scope formidably to respond to any inspiration from Berlin. PRIESTS IN CONSPIRACY. LONDON, April 20. The Bucharest correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that 200 priests were among those arrested in connection with the Iron Guard conspiracy. Both the vicar and the curate of one Bucharest church are included, causing the cancellation of the Easter service. Many junior army officers have also been imprisoned. Military and civilian lawyers are working ns speedily as possible to expedite the trials, and it is hoped many will be completed before the week-end.
