RUGBY SEASON

IN THE MANAWATU. ENTRIES FOR COMPETITIONS. The management committee of the Manawatu Rugby Union met last evening, when there were present: — Messrs A. M. Ongley (chairman), H. Hands, J. A. Colquhoun, P. 0. Skogluud, AV. Carruthers. H. 11. Crawford, K. W. Eg 1 inton, H. Palmer, F. E. Sherwood, E. Clevely and W. Gleeson. The New Zealand Union advised that Manawatu’s request to have a date allotted for a special challenge for the Ranfurly Shield had been referred to the incoming committee. The New Zealand Union also advised that the following had been proposed by the council to be added to the Rani'urly .Shield rules “Should the holder of the shield he defeated in any challenge match, and any challenge matches arranged with the then holder be not played, all such challenge matches shall be treated as having been arranged with the subsequent holder and may be played during the current season, and at such time as shall be mutually agreed between the unions concerned ; and failing any such agreement shall be fixed by the council of the New Zealand Union.” It was decided, on the motion of the chairman, that the union’s delegates to the annual meeting of the parent body support the proposal. The New Zealand Union forwarded the following resolution from the Wanganui Union :—“That an All Black team be chosen in 1939 and engaged in a tour of New Zealand, playing 10 or 12 games and excluding the four centres, and that the team be accompanied on this tour by the New Zealand selector or selectors.”—This matter was left in the hands of the delegates to the New Zealand Union. COMPETITION ENTRIES. The following entries were received for the competitions : Senior.—lvia Toa. Old Boys, United, St. Patrick’s,. Feilding, Massey College, Fcilding Old Boys. Junior.—lvia Toa, Old Boys, St. Patrick’s, Massey College, AYoodville, United, Feilding Old Bovs, Jackevtown, Bunnythorpe. Fourth grade.—Kia Toa, United. Fifth grade.—Kia Toa. Sixth grade.—Kia Toa. Entries in the last three grades have not yet closed. Replies from the various clubs which had been circularised regarding senior matches indicated that the majority of them preferred playing on the rear ground at the Showgrounds to playing at Rugby Park, also that they favoured matches starting at 1.30 p.m. on the oval to 3 p.m. on the background The matter was referred to the fixtures committee, the chairman remarking that the committee would endeavour to comply with the wishes of the clubs. GENERAL. The Feilding Club was granted permission to play Marton Old Boys at Johnston Park. Feilding. and to make a charge at the gate, the match being a benefit one for an injured Levin playerAYoodville Club applied for eight players to be regraded from senior to

junior. The request was granted. Two St. Patrick’s players, AV. Shearman and H. Shearman, were re-graded from junior to third grade. An application from the AA’oodville Club for a grant of two guineas towards its gymnasium expenses was acceded to. Massey College requested the reinstatement of R. Logan, a League player.—lt was resolved to forward the application to the New Zealand Union, with a favourable recommendation. The New Zealand Union notified that arrangements had been made for the broadcasting of matches during the coming season, and that the terms would be disclosed to delegates at the annual meeting. Discussion ensued on the subject of gymnasium nights, no agreement having been reached by the clubs. St. Patrick’s and United had suggested that the matter should be decided by ballot, but Kia Toa and Old Boys favoured a continuance of the present ar-. raugement. As Kia Toa had entered six teams in the competition, it was contended by a number of speakers that the club was entitled to special consideration. It was also pointed out that Old Boys had met the union, by accepting a night which other clubs did not want. It was eventually resolved, on the motion of Mr Colquhoun, that Kia Toa be allotted AVednesday night, Old Bovs Tuesday and United and St. Patrick’s Mondays and Thursdays in alternate weeks. Owing to the fact- that injured Massey College players do not at present receive the same insurance benefits as players belonging to other clubs, although they are called on to pay the same contributions, a notice of * motion was given to remove this anomaly At present the position is that, unless wages or salary are i lost, no injured player is entitled lo compensation, and it is proposed to eliminate tkis requirement in the case of Massey College players. The Department of Agriculture forwarded a letter of appreciation from the district committee of the Young Farmers’ Clubs, which had placed on record the Manawatu Union’s ready co-operation in connection with the Young Farmers’ Club seven-a-side tourney at the Winter Show.
