SPORTS CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPIICI, April 21. Mrs V. G. Claridge presided over the annual meeting of the Opiki Sports Club; there was a fair attendance and the president was returned to office unopposed. Miss .Ella Marriott was elected lion, secretary and treasurer. It was decided that the opening of the table tennis season will be held early in May. The redecoration of the hall will be commenced this week. The Opiki Women’s Institute is co-operating with this work. SATURDAY NIGHT DANCE. The social committee of the Opiki Hall Society has resumed activities, and the dance on Easter Saturday night attracted a ,fair attendance. The lucky spot dance was won by Miss Noeline Phillips and Mr A. McPherson, and the Monte Carlo waltz by Mr E. Kay and partner. PERSONAL. Misses Sybil Abbott and Peggy Halligan, of Wellington, spent the Easter week-end with Mr and Mrs I. D. Aitchison. Miss E. Matthews spent the holidays in Wan ganui. Mrs M. S. Gregory iias returned from a holiday trip to Nelson. Mr N. Hansen, of Alfredton, is staying with Mr J. Hansen, Makerua Plains. Week-end guests of Mr and Mrs C. Marriott wore Sir and Mrs A. Hey, Mrs Clark, and Mr C. Hall, all of Lower Hutt, and Mr E. Hall, of Danncvirke. Mr and Mrs S. Horn were week-end visitors to relatives in Chau. A Wellington visitor, Miss Jessie Hendrickson, has returned home after spending a few days with Mr and Mrs O. Christensen. Mrs P. R. Ivriven was the guest of Mr and Mrs Ransom, of Palmerston North, during the week. Guests of Mr and Mrs R. M. Phillips for the week-end were Mr and Mrs E. Olliver, of Hawera, and Misses Joan and Marion Sanne, of Te Arakura. Mr and Mrs J. Percy and family have returned from a holiday trip to Auckland. Mr and Mrs J. R. Nairn, Miss Doreen Nairn, and Miss Whoki MeCullum, all of Hawera, were guests ot Mr and Mrs J. A. Cookslcy for Easter. Mr Nairn is drum-major of the liawora Pipe Band which was successful in gaining second place at the recent contest. Mrs 11. Bagust, of Auckland, is tho guest of Mr and Mrs Y. G. Claridge. Mr W. White has returned to Wellington after visiting his parents Mr and Mrs A. E. White. Mr and Mrs Geo. Pavne have left the district to reside in Bulls. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

“People who help us most arc those who encourage us” was the motto at the monthly meeting of the Opiki Women’s Institute on Wednesday. Mr B. A. Norman presided over a fair attendance. Apologies for absence wore received from Mesdames G. J. Wildo and J. Mabcy. The resignation of Mrs G. Payne was received with regret. An invitation for members to attend the birthday dance early in May was received from the Tokomaru Institute. The delegates to the North Wellington Federation half-yearly council meeting at Palmerston North were given instructions as to voting on the resolutions put forward by the Mil-011 and Awahuri Institutes respectively. Mrs D. G. Yule and Mrs W. Irwin were appointed to represent Opiki at the Manawhenua group committee meeting at Shannon. The results of the potatogrowing competition for the 1937-38 vear are: —Mrs 11. Wilson, 641 b 13oz, 1; Mrs P. R. Krivon 2, Miss E. Marriott 3. The programme planning was also judged, the winner being Miss L. Carson, with Mrs I. Mabey second. The golden thread talk on “the country I would like (o visit, and why,” Canada, was given by a member before Mrs 11. Bagust, of Auckland, demonstrated fancy needlework. This was much appreciated and the many samples of lovely handwork duly admired. Mrs G. Larson expressed thanks to the demonstrator. The gardening circle's competition for “the best flower in my garden” was judged by Mrs Larsen and Mrs W. Bond, and brought forward 11 entries: Mrs F. Nagel 1. Mrs C. Marriott 2. Mrs M. S. Gregory 3. Tho competition for tho best date scones (seniors) resulted: Mrs D. G. Yule 1. Airs P. R. Kriven 2, Mrs H. Sanies 3: pikelets (juniors). Miss E. Marriott 1. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames J. D. A itch ison. W. Bond, A. E. White and P. R. Kriven. Tho large piece of birthday cake received from the Longhorn Women's Institute was a most appreciated gift.
