WILSON AERODROME.

CITY COUNCIL’S OPERATIONS. DEFICIENCY FOR YEAR. An interesting survey of the City Council’s operations in connection with the Milson aerodrome is contained in the annual report submitted, last evening, to the council by the town clerk (Mr J. R. Hardie). Referring to the fact that the aerodrome account is a new one, Mr Hardie recalls that the council negotiated the purchase of the property comprising 125 acres from the owner on September 1, 1937. “The control of the aerodrome was assumed by the council as from June 23, 1937. The revenue for the year amounted to £197, of which the sum of £173 was provided by rents received,” states tlie report. “The expenditure amounted to £716 5s 4d, and the deficiency was met by a transfer of £519 2s Id from the general account. The expenditure included the purchase price of 90 wethers (£lOl ss) which it is proposed to graze on the reserves and aerodrome with a view to keeping down the cost of mowing these areas and keeping tlie grass in a good state. A permanent caretaker has now been appointed, and a first-class service befitting the importance of. tlie aerodrome is now available to visiting aeroplanes.” . Mr J. R. Hughes (city engineer) also referred to the aerodrome in liis triennial report. Since taking over the area of 125 acres 3 roods 14.5 perches, paths and lawns had heen formed at the entrance from McKenzie Road, soil carted for the planting of Lawsoniana. trees, drains extended, and sheepproof fences erected. The city water supply had been laid on to the haugars and administrative block, and the entrance road tar-sealed from McKenzie Road to the administrative block. The aerodrome proper had been levelled and tile-drained bv the Public Works Department, subsidised labour being engaged on the work. . During'the three years, said Mr Hughes, working drawings, specifications, details and supervision of work had been done by his department in connection with, structures valued at about £10,400.
