SUPPORT FOR MR EDEN
THE RECENT CONTROVERSARY. LONDON, Fell. 22. The tone of the London Conservative Press is entirely out of keeping with the indignation which is'felt throughout the capital about Mr Eden’s resignation, especially as the magnitude of what is popularly regarded in Great Britain and Prance as a German and Italian victory becomes more apparent. To look at the crisis through the eyes solely of the London party Press is to run a risk of failing to interpret correctly the intensity of public feeling throughout Britain. A survey of the Press of the provinces, coupled with a survey of the London Press, reveals very strong support for Mr Eden and an overwhelming revulsion against Mr Chamberlain’s decision. None of the Conservative London papers reports Empire views to any extent, although Reuter’s and other news agencies are pouring in hundreds of words of comment from the Dominions and from foreign countries; hut, wherever Dominion opinion is quoted it is invariably anti-Chamber-lain. There is not the slightest doubt that the powerful Conservative organs do not wish to represent the full feeling of support for Mr Eden, and are endeavouring to stem the rising tide of indignation by declaring on their posters “Crisis Over.” The Liberal and independent Press reprint oversea comment, which reveals that leading papers throughout the Empire are denouncing Mr Chamberlain, who is described by so staid a journal as the Calcutta Statesman as having “made a gross blunder, which spells the beginning of the end of his Government.”
Great publicity is given in certain independent papers to the New York Post’s statement that; “The greatest crime of all is that British Ministers have sold out their people and sold out the interests of the Empire.”
