SECOND OFFENCE.

WOMAN ON RACECOURSE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND March 4. On a summons charge <J. being found unlawfully on Ellerslie racecourse, Eileen Lucy Satcliell appeared in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., to-day, and pleaded guilty. “This woman was caught carrying on the occupation of a bookmaker at Ellerslie on January 29, the first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting,” said Detective-Sergeant A. G. McHugh. “She appeared in this Court on January 31, when she was fined £5 for bookmaking. Despite the fact that she was warned not to continue this illegal occupation, she immediately loft the racecourse and again carried on betting.” The Magistrate : Did she leave when told to?—“She was put off the course.”

A tearful plea to the Magistrate was made by defendant. “I borrowed some money to pay the fine and I only went out to try and get enough to pay hack what I had borrowed.” she said. “It was rather cheeky to go back to the racecourse and bet again after you were convicted and warned,” the Magistrate told the woman. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six mouths, and was warned that if she offended again during that time the consequences would be serious.
