FLOOD DAMAGE
TOLL IN CALIFORNIA. HOLLYWOOD SUFFERS. CRITICAL PERIOD PAST. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received March 4, 9.30 a.m. LOS ANGELES, March 3. The flood damage is now estimated at between 15,000,000 and 30,000,000 dollars. Hollywood is isolated and 600 children are marooned in the North Hollywood High School. Paramount’s lot is flooded. Miss Sylvia Sidney, Mr George Raft, Miss Dorothy Laniour, Miss Alary Carlisle and Air Ray Millard moved between the sets in rowboats. Warships off Los Angeles put out their boats and turned on their searchlights and picked up survivors when a beach bridge collapsed. Nearly 10,000 families arc homeless, scores are missing, and at least 35 are dead. Santa Anna, 40 miles from Los Angeles, is cut off and is asking ior help. Ten persons have been drowned. Short-wave radio is the only means of communication over a wide area. The army and navy are gathering in the refugees in Los Angeles, pitching tents and supplying food. A hundred people are marooned on an island in a river in North Hollywood. !
A huge “whale” seen floundering among the wreckage was the rubber studio prop. Tbe most critical period is now believed to be past.
