SUEZ CANAL DEFENCES. NO ITALIAN REQUEST. BRITISH VIEWPOINT. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.- Copyright.) (British Official Win-less.) Received March I, 10.20 a.in. RUGBY, Feb. 28. Mr Chamberlain /Prime .Minister) was questioned to-day iri the House of Commons regarding the alleged claim by Italy to a share in the defence of the Huey. Canal. He replied that lie had not caused any search to he made in the Foreign Office archives prior to. 1922, hut since that year the British Government had not been aware of any request by Italy for a share in the defence of the Sues Canal. Mr Chamberlain added that an official statement issued in Rome yesterday bad described the reports as to the Italian claims regarding armed supervision of the Suez Canal as fantastic. The Cairo correspondent of Hie Times on January 2d stated Hint the authorities hail completed preliminary estimates for barracks for British troops in the Suez Canal zone, costing £12,000,000. including underground storage for fuel and ammunition. An aerodrome with 400 acres was being constructed at Genileh, costing £1,000,000.
