CROWDS PROTEST
PREMIER’S "SURRENDER.” RESIGNATIONS DEMANDED. SCENES IN LONDON. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received February 28, 11.30 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 27. Three meetings in Trafalgar Square contributed 10,000 people who marched to the Italian, Embassy, accompanied by bands, singing “The Internationale” and shouting “Chamberlain must go!” The police permitted two men to approach with a letter to Signor Mussolini conveying a resolution disapproving of Mr Chamberlain’s “surrender to Italian threats,” and condemning the Italian intervention in Spain.
Tlie letter was pushed under the door because the doorbell was not answered. Another resolution demanded the Government’s resignation. Two thousand persons attended a demonstration in Hyde Park organised ’by the Co-oporativce Society and passed a resolution protesting against Mr Chamberlain’s foreign policy and demanding a general election. A member of the House of Commons, Mr A. Barnes, declared that Lady Austen Chamberlain bad superseded the British Ambassador in Rome. Mr C. R. Attlee (Labour Leader), speaking at Gosport, endorsed Mr Eden’s action in upholding the sanctity of international law, and added: “It was not worthy of England to throw him over at the demand of a foreign Power.
