LAWN TENNIS

CHRISTIE CUP. RETAINED BY MANAWATU. The Manawatu tennis team staved off the second challenge of the season for the Christie Cup on Saturday at the Linton Street courts, when they succeeded in beating a strong Hawke’s Bay side by 4 matches. Only at one stage was the cup in jeopardy. That was when, at the commencement of the mixed doubles, the home side needed one more match to decide the issue. They had had 12 wins, but lost another four matches before achieving the thirteenth. The excitement became intense. However, Boddy and Mrs MacDonald came to the rescue, beating Lowry and Miss Milbura after a, hard struggle. The Manawatu players annexed the first set fairly easily, 6—2, but the second was anyone’s game. Boddy lost several match points through smashing out. Finally, with Boddy serving, Lowry hit the ball into the net to give the set, match and cup to the local players. Ip the preceding play N. R. C. Wilson showed a glimpse of his old form in the mixed doubles. His display was outstanding. It is worth recording that Mrs Adams (an ex-New Zealand junior champion) with Livingstone, was opposing her sister Miss Howe, partnered by Wilson when they met in the mixed doubles, and it was a contest which produced some excellent tennis. . . QUIST’S EXHIBITION. EXTENDED BY ANGAS Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 26. Matched against C. Angas in a liveset exhibition tennis match at Wilding Park this afternoon, A. K. Quist, Australia’s No. 1 Davis Cup player, was fully extended. Angas led 4—l in the first set and again s—l5 —1 in the fourth set after winning, the third. Quist peppered his opponent with a stream of skidding drives and worked up to a volleying coup with masterly co-ordination. The speed and • accuracy of his service were also decidig factors in his victory. In the first set he served three clean aces. He was particularly effective also in jrunning back to a high lob and smashing it on, the rebound. Quist won 6 —4, 6—2, 6 —B, 7—5. •ANGAS’S CLAIMS. FOR DAVIS CUP TEAM. ~' Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 27. Commenting on the report from Wellington that the New Zealand Tennis Association may reverse the previous decision by sending A. D. Brown and D. C. Coombe (Wellington) to join C. E. Malfroy for the Davis Cup contest, “Crosscourt,” tennis writer of the Press, urges the Canterbury association to pressfor the inclusion of C. Angas as-having superior claims to Coombe. Angas, it is pointed out, recently beat Brown brilliantly in the Wilding Shield match, and on Saturday extended A. K. Quist (Australia) in a special match. Quist, who praises Angas’s play, strongly urges the sending of a r Davis Cup team. ¥ The Canterbury administrators are warned against having again to face a fait accompli as was the case last year when the New Zealand association sent Coombe abroad after having previously decided that no player showed form warranting inclusion'in the team.
